The Brain Research Foundation Center for Neurobiology was established in 1991 to advance molecular neurobiology research, treatment, and training at the University of Chicago.

The Brain Research Foundation was founded by neurobiologists Dr. Frederic A. Gibbs, Dr. Ladislas J. Meduna, and Dr. Carl C. Pfeiffer. Since 1964, the BRF has collaborated with the University of Chicago to support innovative neuroscience research. Today, the foundation awards grants to brain research throughout Chicago.
