The Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence was created in 2011 to strengthen doctor-patient relationships through research, teaching, and patient care. The institute aims to improve doctor-patient communication and enhance the skills of physicians in helping patients make informed decisions about their treatment.
The Bucksbaum Institute was named in honor of Matthew and Carolyn “Kay” Bucksbaum. Matthew served on the Division of the Biological Sciences and Pritzker School of Medicine Council; Kay serves on the advisory committees of the Bucksbaum Institute and the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, and holds other volunteer leadership roles at the University of Chicago.
